The Challenge

Late-stage involvement required rapid delivery and installation of statement greenery to enhance the building’s premium lobby and cafe areas.

Key Constraints:

  • Plants were a late consideration (common pain point for BADs).
  • Weight limitations on existing structures.
  • Access restrictions prevented typical installation methods.
  • The project had to meet strict aesthetic and longevity requirements.

The Solution

We provided a turnkey solution, managing everything from plant selection to installation and maintenance programming. Our 5-F Step Process guided the design and installation:

  • Foundation: Enhance the first impression of the foyer space with large-scale trees and lush underplanting.
  • Feel: Create a sophisticated, welcoming green environment aligned with the building’s premium aesthetic.
  • Flight Paths: Ensure unobstructed sightlines and integrate planting into natural human flow.
  • Focal Points: Make a statement with two 5m trees as centerpieces of the lobby.
  • Function: Deliver low-maintenance, long-life planting solutions to minimise ongoing client involvement.

Project Highlights

  • Installed 2 x 5m Trees in 500kg Concrete Troughs
    • Used advanced planning and installation to crane trees into position without removing glass panels, avoiding costly building modifications.
  • Custom Joinery Integration
    • Installed 5 x 3m Ficus benjamina into bespoke joinery, with tailored underplanting, achieving a natural yet architectural look.
  • Specification Change for Longevity and Aesthetics
    • Switched from Ficus Hillii to Ficus benjamina:
      • Growth Benefits: 450mm–600mm annual growth under optimal conditions.
      • ULE: 7–10 years, up to 15 years with proper care.
      • Fuller Canopy: Enhanced spread for a lush, aesthetic impact.
  • Weight & Cost Savings
    • Replaced 300kg concrete liners with 10kg fibreglass planters, saving thousands and reducing structural load.
  • Efficient Watering Solution
    • Implemented Mona sub-irrigation tanks, reducing maintenance frequency and ensuring consistent plant health.
  • Hands-On Quality Control
    • Flew to the Sunshine Coast to hand-select trees, providing real-time photo updates to architects and designers for approval.
