Design and install an indoor Zen garden that enhances the dining experience, fits within strict building load limitations, and sustains healthy plant life.

Besuto Restaurant Zen Garden – Sydney CBD

Seamlessly blending authentic Zen aesthetics with innovative sub-irrigation and environmental control.

The Challenge

  • Required 35cm elevation to create planting depth and garden prominence.
  • Weight constraints ruled out filling with heavy aggregates.
  • No access to irrigation or drainage infrastructure.
  • Limited airflow and natural light.
  • Dry indoor conditions necessitated humidity control.

The Solution

  • Raised Garden Construction
    • Installed a matte black metal trim, creating a sleek perimeter and raising the garden bed.
    • Built a false floor, reducing material weight and achieving the necessary elevation.
  • Hidden Passive Sub-Irrigation System
    • Used a fibreglass pond liner as a watertight reservoir.
    • Installed a mulch plate with cut holes for plants, each equipped with wicking systems.
    • The plants passively drew water from the reservoir, ensuring consistent hydration without visible irrigation.
  • Environmental Enhancements
    • Installed grow lights for photosynthesis.
    • Added an old-style Japanese fan for air circulation.
    • Introduced a bamboo water feature to increase humidity.
